This is a snapshot of the book-cover for my new book project. It is about 8.3×10.3 inches and printed on heavy weight Kraft paper, just like the covers for the other books I’ve recently done. It will be a stab binding book again, and the front and back cover are stiffened with board. So on the left side it will have the stab binding and the requisite holes when finished. For starters I am just making one artist’s copy. Strathmore drawing paper will be used for the pages again. I was going to switch to regular inkjet paper to give the photos maximum punch, but I really like the look and feel of the Strathmore paper better, and think I can tweak the image files sufficiently to give me good looking prints.
This is one of the images I will use for a full page bleed. I am making those 9.2×8 inches, leaving .8 inches of white space on the side that will be part of the binding. This image printed nearly as good as it looks on the screen – I can live with that. Those of you who have been following my work for a while will know that Once They Were refers to the motels and gasoline station along route 19/98 in Florida.

I came upon your blog about a month ago and was really impressed. So I started to read from the beginning and have just gotten up to date. WOW!
So many things that I’ve thought about doing I’ve read about in the past few weeks in your blog that you’re actually doing.
So, some of the things that you have inspired me to do are:
1. Buy a pinhole camera (http://www.pinholecamera.com/ ) Charles is a VERY nice man.
2. Dig out my darkroom stuff, and buy some Cyanotype chemistry.
3. Come up with a project and make my own book.

BTW, how strong is the craft paper as a “hinge”?

Hey muggs – thank you so very much for your very kind comments – they lifted my spirits! Just before I opened this I thought to myslef ‘I have got to get out the Cyanotype stuff and get going’ – so this was the kick I needed! :)
The Kraft paper I am using is the heavy stuff – I am not sure what the specs actually are. I picked up a roll of it at COSTCO, but of course, now I can’t find it again. I think it is ‘strong enough.’ The thing is, it is doubled over because I leave about a three inch ‘tail’ on the hinge side, that is doubled over and glued on the inside of the board. That than is covered with a clean sheet of Strathmore paper, so the hinge has three layers. I have not had any problem with the hinge being weak, and I am not gentle with my books.Happy photography with the pinhole camera – I know you will love it!
