“Victorian Ladies, Paperboys and the Culture of Beauty…”

920103-12nikweb920103-16nikwebThese are for my friend Laerke Posselt, a Danish photographer, who has had her Beautiful Child photo essay published in Germany and Japan. I am truly delighted to know that she is doing well.

Her essay reminded me of some photographs I took about 20 years ago in northern Florida, at the Victorian Lady Beauty Pageant. I had hoped to follow that up with more photos from similar beauty contests, but never got around to it. Previously I had written how the photos from that time, which were made in the same local as the setting for the novel The Paperboy  are taking on a new meaning with the making of the movie of the same name. Another interesting twist to the story of these photos is that a few years ago I donated mural size prints of these photos for a sale by the Cedar Key Arts Center, and they were bought by Bo Diddley, who certainly had been one of my Rock ‘n Roll heroes.
