When using black and white film the outcome is pretty predictable, the print will be in b&w unless it is later hand colored, which I basically never do. Now with digital, whether to go with a black and white or color version is – obviously – more complicated. Working on my Florida highway series, I run into this all the time. There is so much interesting color out there, and what is it that I want to convey with my final photo. This one looks like a typical Florida photo – whatever that is. The blue sky, the clouds, palm trees and pink buildings. With me it evokes the feeling of hot breezes with a touch of salt air mingled in them, and perhaps the sound of the Atlantic not too far away. Problem is, this photo was taken in north Florida, miles away from the Atlantic or Gulf, and the the most likely aroma any breeze around here carries is the foul smell from a paper-mill somewhere nearby.
