“Pleasant Surprise…”

20130315_0231webAfter first being pretty upset and ready to blast the company on this blog, I was really pleasantly surprised to receive this booklet with ten of my Cyanotypes. When I first ordered it through issuu I was informed that it would take about 13 days – after about a month went by and I had not received it, I started to get concerned, but then voilà it arrived and much to my surprise I noticed that it had come from Amsterdam. That explained it! If you have not checked out the issuu web site, I highly recommend you take a look at it. On it you can ‘publish’ your work in an e-book format by simply uploading a PDF to the site. Then, if you want to, you can have the thing printed. I thought I would give it a try, especially since the cost would be under $15.00 – I felt I had little to lose. So I ordered this 6.5″ x 8.5″ booklet, expecting to get something printed on cheap paper and stapled, instead I received this very attractively bound and printed volume. It had taken me not more than ten minutes to put the thing together and upload it. I had not even bothered with any kind of copyright notice, foreword, author’s name, and all the usual stuff that goes with a publication. 20130315_0232webPlease pardon the rather poor photos of the booklet. I just did them in mixed light, hand-holding my camera with the lens wide open and a ridiculously slow shutter speed. The company that printed it is Peecho, Roking 75, 1012 KL Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I am impressed!

  1. I’ve been self publishing with Blurb.com for the last 3 years. The books work out ridiculously expensive for some reason, and they are also printed in Holland. I’m going to check out issuu as I very much like the look of your volume.

Hello Christian , I understood very well what you mean :) thank you for the tip . I have to present my projects in booklet format in June . Since holland is rather close to Antwerp , I ll give this a try. About your work , do you consider to present your work ?. Or is it too soon and maybe inappropriate to ask .

  3. Hey Bart – I am delighted to know that this might be of some help. Let me know how it turns out, if you use them. Hey, that is not an inappropriate question – I would really like to show the Cyanotypes, but don’t have a gallery and have not looked around for one. Perhaps one will turn up

Christian, could you help me out. If one wants to present only images on issuu , must it be send in pdf format or jpeg? Can you choose the style how the content will be presented ? how did you retrieve a link to print the content to.. thx

      • Hi Bart – Here is what I did. I put the thing together in PowerPoint which I then converted to a PDF. In PowerPoint you design the page the way you would like it to look. I do not think you can just send up jpgs. If that is what you would like to do, I would recommend you use Blurb:
        http://www.blurb.com/
On issuu you simply go to ‘My Library’ once you have sent the pdf up and click on the book and above and to the right of your book you will see a blue rectangle that says something like ‘Order print from $XX.xx’. If you click on that, it will walk you through the process

    That book looks lovely, Christian!

  6. Thanks Christian. Blurb is what it is (I have mixed feelings). It’s great to be made aware of alternatives. Thanks for sharing!
